More than 70% of India’s population is associated with farming & agriculture, mostly living in villages.
Over the past decade, younger generations living in villages have been migrating to urban centers, looking for a higher standard of living,
better infrastructure, and increased earning potential. Unfortunately, this trend has negatively impacted rural villages,
leaving behind an aging population and an agriculture labor shortage. Reduced agriculture productivity has, in turn, created food shortages and inflation.
To address this farmer's pressing need, eKisaan foundation has launched a “Smart Village” framework to build sustainable eco-systems outside cities
to create an attractive livelihood and help counteract the trend of migration to urban centers.
Our Approach is to “Enhance touch points, actively Engage all people, & thereby Empowering our village community.”
Our objective is to build a model framework that other organizations can use to create smart villages throughout India, and in other countries as well.
eKisaan’s “Smart Village” framework is very scalable and replicable across geographic locations.
A typical village can be transformed into a “Smart” village by upgrading the Infrastructure and incorporating information and communication technology to provide metrics that enable all aspects of a village to be tracked and improved. Approach is to upgrade daily touch points (Infrastructure) and get the village connected to the larger eco system.
While creating a Smart village is a ambitious task, it is possible to have a major impact in a very short time, by focusing on what we call “WHEEL”, which stands for Water, Health, Education, Energy & Land. This is a flexible framework customized to a Panchayat/village and provides a structured approach to upgrade the village infrastructure
To connect to the larger eco-system would need bringing people into the system fold, formalizing processes and implemeting the right technology at the grass root level.
Smart Village initiative is open for all creative minds to "Ideate, Refine & Implement". This initiative is open to all companies, colleges, students and individuals.
We welcome teams to conceptulize and implement low-cost sustainable ideas that works for rural conditions. Current work is in progress in pilot village in Karnataka.
If you have ideas or you would like to participate in this initiative, write to sri.ekisaan@gmail.com or fletcher@media.mit.edu
Pulmonary disease is responsible for 14% of deaths worldwide. Pneumonia is the leading cause of death for children under 5 years old, COPD is the second leading cause
of death for adults in India, and Asthma and Tuberculosis are significant causes of disability. Unfortunately, in India pulmonary disease is under-diagnosed or
largely ignored in the primary care system because rural doctors and health workers are not fully trained to diagnose pulmonary disease and few tools exist to help doctors.
eKisaan foundation is working with MIT D-Lab to help field test low-cost diagnostic tools developed by MIT
and The Chest Research Foundation in India.
These tools make use of the mobile phone to perform simple tests and apply smart algorithms.
Visual learning materials is effective in enriching the classroom experience for students by enabling them to observe situations and processes
which are otherwise difficult to portray inside the classroom on a blackboard. Extensive studies have generated evidence to support that the use of digital
audio visual materials – either static images or video – during the teaching process can raise students’ attention levels and can also significantly improve
their performance in retention and comprehension tasks.
E-learning and Digital class room were till now confined to the Urban and Elite schools since current solutions are expensive and consume more power
requiring expensive power backup. eKisaan foundation is working with UTeach team to help field test an integrated low cost solution that uses substantially
lesser power.
